World Mental Health Day 2022

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. The theme of 2022's World Mental Health Day, as set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is ‘making mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.

WHO recognises that whilst the pandemic has, and continues to, take its toll on our mental health, the ability to reconnect through World Mental Health Day 2022 will provide us with an opportunity to re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health.  Many aspects of mental health have been challenged; and already before the pandemic in 2019 an estimated one in eight people globally were living with a mental disorder. At the same time, the services, skills and funding available for mental health remain in short supply, and fall far below what is needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

WHO are working with partners to campaign around this year’s theme which will be an opportunity for people with mental health conditions, advocates, governments, employers, employees and other stakeholders to come together to recognize progress in this field and to be vocal about what we need to do to ensure Mental Health & Well-Being becomes a Global Priority for all.

World Mental Health Day is also a chance to talk about mental health in general, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to talk about things and get help if you are struggling.

At Mind in Brighton and Hove we will be undertaking a range of additional activities and engaging with a number of local events across Sussex to mark WMHD.

The Mental Health Advice Service are piloting our new Stress Toolkit Workshop on 12th October. This course is a practical based course exploring what stress is and its impact on us, and helps people to start to build a personal 'toolkit'. In addition, our Advice Service will also be providing a short talk about stigma and mental health, at the City Wide Conference 2022 Living with disability, Challenging Stigma on Saturday 8th October. We will also be promoting and providing information about our services.

Our Wellbeing in East Sussex Project has created a Five Ways to Wellbeing resource to raise awareness of local resources and celebrate WMHD. Also, in East Sussex, as part of the Men’s Mental Health Project in Hastings, we are hosting an evening at The Common Room on Monday 10th October 6-8pm. We will be discussing men’s wellbeing in Hastings and how we can design coasters for local pubs, cafés and barbers to encourage conversation and signpost to support.

In West Sussex our advocates will be setting up displays in key hospitals to both to promote and raise awareness and increase access to the advocacy services across the county: www.mindcharity.co.uk/west-sussex/advocacy
